Carthage to place recreational pot sales tax proposal on ballot

In the wake of now-legal sales of recreational marijuana in Missouri, municipalities want to impose taxes on the legal weed to create a new source of revenue.

One of those cities is Carthage where the City Council has decided to place a proposed 3% sales tax on recreational marijuana on the ballot.

Carthage Council members unanimously voted to put the measure on the April 4th municipal ballot.

The funds generated would go into Carthage’s general fund.

The city hopes to generate at least $50,000 – and possibly more – in the first year of the tax.
