Joplin, Mo. - Missouri Southern State University alumnus Mark Tedford has made university history, becoming the first graduate of Missouri Southern to be elected to the United States Congress.
Tedford earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Finance and Economics, in 1992. On November 3, he was elected to represent Oklahoma's First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is scheduled to take office on January 3, 2027.
His election marks a significant milestone for Missouri Southern and highlights the accomplishments of a graduate whose professional, community and public service career reflects the university's commitment to developing leaders who make a difference.
Tedford's relationship with Missouri Southern came full circle in May 2025, when he returned to campus as the university's spring commencement speaker. During the ceremony, he addressed graduating students as a successful business owner, public servant and proud alumnus, sharing the perspective of someone whose journey began in the classrooms and on the football field at MSSU.
In his commencement address, Tedford challenged graduates to pursue purpose rather than simply success, emphasizing the importance of personal growth, lifelong learning and taking advantage of opportunities to serve others.
"Know yourself so that you can find your purpose through the calling of work. Grow yourself to achieve mastery at your calling and push yourself to take advantage of opportunities to make meaningful contributions in your communities and industries," Tedford told the MSSU Class of 2025. "Your degree is a launchpad. Your future is wide open. Make it count."
During his time at Missouri Southern, Tedford played football and distinguished himself academically, receiving the Bartlett Respect Award and the Accounting Department's Outstanding Student Award in 1992. He graduated cum laude as well.
His commitment to his alma mater has continued well beyond graduation. Tedford is a member of the Missouri Southern Foundation's Lantern Society, recognizing individuals who provide outstanding support to the university.
As he prepares to begin his service in Washington, Tedford's achievement represents a historic first for Missouri Southern and an inspiring milestone for current students, graduates and the university community. His journey from Missouri Southern graduate to the halls of Congress offers a powerful example of the possibilities that begin with an education and a commitment to making a difference.
