After months of renovations, one of Joplin's oldest parks is preparing to welcome visitors back with nearly $10 million in improvements.

The city has scheduled a reopening celebration for Ewert Park on Thursday, December 17, at 2 p.m.

The renovation includes a new splash park with an ice-skating ribbon, an ADA-accessible playground, covered basketball and pickleball courts, an amphitheater and historical displays highlighting the park's cultural significance.

Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg said the project was about more than adding recreational amenities.

"Revitalizing Ewert Park has been an important project, not only in terms of bringing new recreation offerings to Joplin but also because we have been working with such a meaningful location in the City's history," Bloomberg said.

The renovation is the largest project in Phase III of the city's Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax program, approved by voters in 2021.

Additional funding came from use tax revenue designated for beautification efforts.
