A Joplin man is being held without bond after allegedly kidnapping a woman and beating her so severely that doctors feared she had suffered a brain injury.

40-year-old Marcus Ryan Barnes faces two felony charges in Newton County: first-degree domestic assault involving serious physical injury and first-degree kidnapping.

According to a probable cause statement, Barnes allegedly punched the woman repeatedly in the face, head, shoulders, and arms during a roughly four-and-a-half-hour assault on Sunday.

Investigators say Barnes also strangled the woman until she lost consciousness and prevented her from leaving a camper or accessing her phone.

When authorities arrived, Barnes allegedly refused to open the camper door at first. Authorities eventually rescued the woman and took her to a hospital.

Investigators documented extensive bruising, defensive wounds, and both eyes swollen shut. Medical personnel suspected a concussion and were evaluating her for a possible brain bleed.

Barnes was arrested Tuesday.

A Newton County judge ordered him held without bond, citing concerns about public safety.
