Lawsuit accuses Mercy Joplin nurse of accessing patient records to harass family
What do you think?
Mercy is facing a class-action lawsuit in Joplin — involving allegations that a nurse used confidential medical records in a personal dispute.
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Jasper County, names Mercy and nurse Brooke Tarter as defendants.
Brandy Anderson and her daughter, Kylie, allege Tarter repeatedly accessed their private info without a legitimate medical reason.
The lawsuit claims Mercy acknowledged unauthorized access to Anderson's personal information but failed to properly address the situation.
According to the petition, Mercy denied that Kylie's records had been improperly accessed when she contacted the hospital.
Beyond the two women, the lawsuit alleges Mercy maintained inadequate safeguards that allowed other employees to access confidential patient records without legitimate medical reasons.
The plaintiffs want compensatory damages, attorney's fees, and other relief. They have requested a jury trial.
The latest allegations have not been proven in court.
