JOPLIN, Mo. — October is recognized nationwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, remember those who have lost their lives and encourage communities to come together in the fight against breast cancer. In Joplin, that mission continued Sunday, October 18, as the Hope 4 You Breast Cancer Foundation hosted its 17th annual Race 4 Hope 5K at Spiva Park in downtown Joplin.

The event brought together runners, walkers, families, volunteers and supporters for an afternoon dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating the strength of those affected by breast cancer. With nearly 400 participants registered, this year's race demonstrated the continued community support behind Hope 4 You's mission.

For 17 years, Race 4 Hope has provided an opportunity for the community to unite around a cause that touches countless families. While the event encouraged participants to get moving, its purpose extended far beyond the finish line.

This year's honorary survivor chair and Hope 4 You board member, Pat Lipira, joined fellow supporters in recognizing the survivors whose strength inspires the foundation's work, as well as the friends and family members who stand beside them throughout their journeys.

"We're celebrating survivors. We're celebrating friends and family that support and encourage survivors. We, the board, want to thank all the volunteers, all the sponsors, all the participants," Lipira said.

The annual race also served as a time of remembrance for those who have lost their lives to breast cancer. Bob, the event's announcer, spoke about the event's long-standing tradition, reflecting on the significance of the gathering and the people it represents.

"17 years we've been doing this. We have right at 400 people entered today. That's fantastic," Bob said. "We are here today to honor our survivors, but also to remember those who have lost their battle with breast cancer."

Those words reflected the heart of Race 4 Hope: celebrating the lives of survivors while keeping the memories of loved ones alive and supporting those who continue to face the challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis.

A Mission Focused on Local Communities

Although breast cancer awareness is recognized nationally and internationally, Hope 4 You was established with a particular focus on helping people closer to home.

The foundation's name represents its guiding mission: HOPE — Help, Outreach, Prevent and Educate. Through these four principles, the organization works to provide assistance, expand awareness, encourage prevention and educate individuals about breast cancer.

While national and international organizations play important roles in the effort to combat breast cancer, the founders of Hope 4 You wanted to identify communities where local support could make a difference.

According to the foundation, its efforts focus on counties where Susan G. Komen for the Cure does not have a presence, allowing Hope 4 You to direct support toward communities that might otherwise have fewer local resources.

The foundation's service area includes five Missouri counties: Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Vernon and Barton; two Oklahoma counties: Ottawa and Delaware; four Kansas counties: Cherokee, Crawford, Labette and Bourbon; and Benton County in Arkansas.

By concentrating its efforts in the four-state region, Hope 4 You seeks to help individuals and families affected by breast cancer while bringing education and outreach closer to the people who need them.

A Community Effort With a Lasting Purpose

Events such as Race 4 Hope rely on the dedication of volunteers, sponsors, participants and board members who share a commitment to the foundation's mission.

Hope 4 You's board members include Sharon Clark, Kim Sanders, Suzanne Hull, Jenny Richards, Nancy Simon, Dan Stengel, Michelle Wood, Pat Lipira, Brenlee McPherson-Buerge, Judy Schneider and Stephanie Taylor.

Their work, along with the contributions of community supporters, helps sustain the foundation's efforts to serve people affected by breast cancer across the region.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, the 17th annual Race 4 Hope offered a reminder that awareness is more than a pink ribbon or a single month on the calendar. It is reflected in the support offered to survivors, the remembrance of those who have died, the sharing of information and the commitment to helping families navigate a difficult journey.

For the participants who gathered at Spiva Park on Sunday, every step represented a shared purpose: honoring lives, encouraging hope and strengthening a community determined to stand together against breast cancer.
