Two killed after car veers off road and hits tree north of Galena

Two people were killed Thursday when their car hit a bridge and then slammed into a tree in Cherokee County.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Cameron G. Witham, of Webb City, and 18-year-old Audrey N. Witham, of Joplin.

The crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on Southeast 110th Street, about three miles north of Galena.

Investigators say Witham was driving a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis northbound when the car struck the right side of the Spring River bridge.

The impact sent the vehicle into a skid before it veered off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Investigators confirmed both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
