Protesting the protestors!

A group called the 'Joplin Patriot Alliance' is organizing a counterprotest Monday in support of ICE and a potential partnership between Joplin police and federal immigration authorities.

The demonstration is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., just 30 minutes after the Joplin-Area Democratic Socialists of America plan to begin their "ICE Out Joplin" protest.

Both demonstrations will take place outside city hall ahead of the Joplin City Council meeting at 6 p.m.

The competing gatherings follow Councilman Brian Cowles' request that city officials examine the federal 287(g) program, which allows specially trained local law enforcement officers to carry out certain immigration enforcement responsibilities under ICE supervision.

While opponents are urging Joplin to reject the program, the Patriot Alliance wants council members to embrace it.

"Those protesting ICE and City Council do not speak for everyone in Joplin," the organization said in its announcement.

The group says its presence will demonstrate that some Joplin residents support immigration enforcement and want local police to cooperate with federal authorities.

The group argued that enforcing immigration laws is essential to protecting American freedoms.

The organization's promotional flyer calls on the Joplin City Council to adopt a 287(g) agreement, declaring, "Public safety is not optional."

Organizers are encouraging supporters to bring American flags while avoiding confrontations and respecting the rights of opposing demonstrators.

Despite the growing political battle, Joplin City Council has not approved a 287(g) agreement, and no vote on the program is scheduled for Monday's meeting.
