The city of Noel, Missouri, is cutting ties with ICE and suspending its interim marshal.

The Council unanimously voted to withdraw from the federal immigration enforcement program and suspend city marshal Daniel Vaughn following public outcry over the detention of a local high school student.

The decisions follow a packed City Council meeting Tuesday, when hundreds gathered to demand answers about the September 29 arrest of 19-year-old Rodrigo Gonzalez Carbajal.

Gonzalez Carbajal was stopped for a traffic violation before later being transferred to federal immigration custody in Springfield.

Residents questioned whether the city's agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was properly authorized and whether or not appropriate procedures were followed during the student's detention.

The 287(g) program allows specially trained local law enforcement officers to perform certain federal immigration enforcement duties under ICE supervision.

"The City remains committed to serving all residents respectfully, maintaining public trust, and promoting the safety and well-being of our community," the announcement stated.

The city says additional information about its withdrawal from the federal program and the marshal's suspension will be released as appropriate.
