Neosho families can enjoy a Halloween evening filled with candy, bounce houses, emergency vehicles and opportunities to meet the people who serve their community when the fourth annual First Responder Halloween Bash returns on Friday October 30.

The free community event is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. that night at Neosho Junior High School.

Organizers expect thousands of children and families to attend, continuing an event that drew approximately 4,000 people last year.

Jessica Johnson with the City of Neosho told KZRG the Halloween bash brings together police officers, sheriff's deputies, firefighters, ambulance personnel, businesses and community organizations for an evening of activities and trick-or-treating in a safe environment.

The event also serves a purpose beyond Halloween fun: building stronger relationships between first responders and the people they serve.

Neosho Police Lt. Crow said the event gives officers an opportunity to interact with children and families outside the stressful circumstances that often bring them into contact with law enforcement.

"We often are there on their worst days," Crow said. "This is really important for us to be able to show them that we're here for them."

The goal, he said, is to help residents get to know officers personally and recognize that police are members of the community who want to help in a variety of ways.

The Halloween bash will feature a walk-through area where children can collect candy while meeting representatives from local businesses, organizations and emergency services. Bounce houses and free food will also be available, with additional food offered for sale.

Children will have opportunities to see police vehicles and equipment, including drones, while fire and emergency medical services personnel will bring vehicles for families to explore. The Newton County and McDonald County Sheriffs' offices are also expected to participate.

Organizers are encouraging additional businesses and community organizations to sign up for the event. Participating groups can distribute candy, share information about their services and introduce families to resources available in the community.

There is no charge for businesses and organizations to participate, although they must provide their own tables, table coverings and candy or other giveaway items. Food vendors can also apply to participate for a fee of approximately $20.

Johnson said organizers are still looking for participants and encourage interested businesses, nonprofits and food vendors to register in advance to ensure they have a designated space.

Those interested can call the Neosho Police Department at 417-451-8012 or visit the city's website at neoshomo.gov for more information.

"We encourage everyone to have a fun free event and spend time with your community," Lt. Crow said.

Organizers also encourage families to follow the City of Neosho's Facebook page and check the city website for updates as additional activities and participants are announced.

The fourth annual event offers families a chance to celebrate Halloween while giving children a positive, informal introduction to the first responders who help keep their community safe.
