CARTHAGE, Mo. — A Carthage man accused of throwing urine on a woman will head to the Missouri Department of Mental Health instead of a courtroom.

A Jasper County judge committed Trey Bowman to state custody after finding him mentally unfit to stand trial.

The order freezes criminal proceedings against him.

Under Missouri law, the court cannot schedule future hearings or move the case forward until state medical staff evaluate Bowman and determine he understands the charges against him and can assist in his own defense.

Bowman faces an assault charge stemming from an incident in which investigators allege he threw urine on a woman.
