A second former GOP Kansas governor is now supporting the democrat in the state’s U.S. Senate race.

Mike Hayden is endorsing Adam Hamilton.

Hayden, who served as governor from 1987 to 1991, announced his endorsement in an opinion piece published by The Wichita Eagle.

This comes after former Gov. Bill Graves endorsed Hamilton a couple of weeks ago.

Hayden said Republican incumbent Roger Marshall has put party politics ahead of the interests of Kansas residents and criticized the senator's support for tariffs and the war in Iran, which have increased costs for farmers and other Kansans.

"Governing should always center around the best interests of the people," Hayden wrote.

Hamilton, a longtime United Methodist pastor from the Kansas City area, said Hayden's endorsement reflects the kind of bipartisan approach he wants to bring to Washington.

The endorsement comes as the Kansas race draws increased national attention.

Republicans have held both of the state's U.S. Senate seats for decades, and no Democrat has won a Kansas Senate election since 1932.

An Emerson College poll conducted in September showed Hamilton at 45% and Marshall at 43%, a difference within the survey's margin of error.
