Remnants of Hurricane Polo could bring several inches of much-needed rain to the area this week, but forecasters warn the tropical moisture could also create a flash flooding threat.
Rain chances increase Wednesday night, with widespread showers and thunderstorms expected Thursday into Friday.
The heaviest rainfall is expected along and west of Interstate 49, where repeated bands of heavy rain could move over the same areas.
For Joplin, Cassville and Pittsburg, the most likely scenario calls for 1.5 to 2 inches of rain through Thursday night. A higher-end scenario could produce 3.5 to 4.5 inches.
Amounts could vary sharply depending on where individual rain bands develop.
Despite severe drought conditions across parts of the region, intense rainfall rates could still overwhelm drainage systems and produce flash flooding.
