Former Miami principal accused of giving students sex toy in a cookie box

MIAMI, Okla. — A former Miami school principal repeatedly urged a student to open a box containing a sex toy, which then led to her removal from the job.

63-year-old Pamela Rae Couch-Bevis, of Joplin, is accused under an Oklahoma law dealing with the publication, distribution or preparation of obscene material.

Miami police say four male students went to Bevis’ office to pick up the school’s Auggie Doggie mascot costume for an upcoming football game.

Bevis allegedly handed one of the students a Nabisco cookie box and told him it was for him.

The students told investigators Bevis repeatedly encouraged the boy to open the box even after he tried to give it back.

He eventually reached inside and pulled out a sex toy.

One student said the group was “in shock” because they did not expect their principal to have the item.

Another said Bevis appeared to know what was inside because she continued telling the student to open it.

Investigators say the sex toy had originally been confiscated by Bevis during the previous school year after it was found stuck to a wall in a boys’ restroom.

Police say Bevis kept it in a box in her office closet rather than disposing of it.

Bevis told detectives the incident was a joke and called it a “poor choice.” She said she did not intend for the student to take the item and suggested she may have kept it to use as a white elephant gift.

Miami Public Schools placed Bevis on paid administrative leave Aug. 26, the day after the incident.

The affidavit also says Bevis later told investigators she reported the incident herself the following morning.

Police determined, however, that a coach had already reported the incident to the district’s athletic director and another administrator before Bevis made that report.

A district judge reviewed the affidavit Monday and found sufficient probable cause to allow the case to proceed.
