Carthage police officers are asking the City Council to reject a bill that would change how they earn overtime and call-back pay.

The Carthage Police Officers Association and Southwest Missouri Regional Lodge 27 of the Fraternal Order of Police say they oppose Council Bill 26-48.

The groups claim the bill would require officers to physically work 80 hours in a 14-day period before earning overtime. Vacation, sick leave, holiday leave and comp time would not count toward those hours.

It would also change how officers are paid when they are called back to work.

Police representatives say those changes should be discussed during ongoing contract negotiations with the city.

They say only one bargaining meeting has been held so far, and another meeting was postponed by the city.

The groups are asking the council to vote no on the bill Aug. 25 and are encouraging residents to attend the 6:30 p.m. meeting.
