A Newton County man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree child molestation.

The investigation into 43-year-old Cortoney Rogers, of Fairview, began in December when a juvenile reported Rogers had sexually abused her over an extended period.

Prosecutors say Rogers later admitted to detectives that he molested the victim.

Five months later, another person came forward and accused Rogers of sexually abusing her as a child approximately 18 years earlier.

Newton County Prosecuting Attorney William Lynch said the sentence sends a clear message to those who prey on children.

“When someone commits these kinds of offenses against a child, we will hold them accountable, no matter how much time has passed since the offense,” Lynch said.

Lynch added that Rogers has a serious ongoing medical condition and could spend the remainder of his life in prison.
