JOPLIN, MO – The mercury may have been low, but the spirits were sky-high at Rivers Bend Family Resort this Saturday as the Joplin community braved the icy waters for the 2026 Polar Plunge.

The annual "Reason for Freezin'" event brought together hundreds of local residents, law enforcement officers, and students, all with a single mission: supporting the Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) athletes of the Southwest Area.

Raising More Than Just Goosebumps

Early reports indicate that this year’s plunge was a resounding success. While final tallies are still being calculated as "post-plunge" donations trickle in, the event has already seen a wave of generosity.

  • Top Individual Fundraiser: Ryan Mendoza led the pack, raising a staggering $1,575—tripling his original goal.

  • Top Fundraising Team: The Carthage Police Department showed their commitment to the Law Enforcement Torch Run by raising over $1,300.

  • Total Community Impact: Combined with the morning's "Polar Bear Strut" 5K, the event is on track to provide significant funding for year-round sports training, health screenings, and competition for more than 12,000 athletes across the state.

A Splash of Creativity

It wasn’t just about the cold; it was about the costumes. Participants took the "Golden Plunger" competition seriously, with teams diving in as everything from superheroes to tropical tourists. The Unified Cardinals brought the most energy as the largest group, with 13 members taking the leap together to promote inclusion in local schools.

"Every dollar raised ensures our athletes can compete on the field and feel included in their community," said a SOMO representative. "Seeing Joplin show up year after year, even when it's freezing, reminds our athletes that they have an entire city cheering them on."

How the Funds Help

The money raised during the 2026 Polar Plunge stays in Missouri to fund:

  • Sports Equipment & Uniforms: For 19 different Olympic-style sports.

  • Healthy Athletes Programs: Providing free health screenings for participants.

  • Unified Sports: Bringing people with and without intellectual disabilities together on the same team.
