Lamar Civic Engagement 101 to engage residents, educate participants

The City of Lamar has a new program designed to educate residents with a behind-the scenes look at City operations.

The free, six-week program titled "Lamar Civic Engagement 101" is designed to engage residents, educate participants on how city government works, build relationships with City staff and enhance the services the city provides to the community.

Participants will tour facilities and meet department leaders, learn how budgets, policies and projects are developed, and understand how to follow an issue from idea to agenda to action.

They will also explore practical ways to stay informed and get involved as well as build better relationships with City staff.

Sessions will be held weekly on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 p.m., beginning February 24th and ending on March 31st. Sessions will run for roughly two hours.

An application and background check is required for the program. Residents can apply online at cityoflamar.org or with a hard copy, picked up and returned at 132 W. 10th Street in Lamar.

The application is available now and must be submitted by February 9th at 4 p.m. Cohort will be notified on February 13th.

“When residents understand how decisions are made and who does the work, we become true partners,” said Mike Hull, Mayor. “Lamar Civic Engagement 101 is a hands‑on way to open City Hall, answer questions, and listen—so we can deliver even better results for our community.”

“Our goal is simple: make it easier for people to navigate local government, meet the team who serves them, and bring their ideas to the table,” said Rusty Rives, City Administrator. “From utilities and public safety to budgeting and planning, participants will see how it all comes together—and how they can help.”

Lamar Civic Engagement 101 is a six-week program that provides a behind‑the‑scenes look at City operations. Participants will:

  • Tour facilities and meet department leaders (e.g., public safety, public works, utilities, finance, planning).

  • Learn how budgets, policies, and projects are developed and implemented.

  • Understand how to follow an issue from idea to agenda to action.

  • Explore practical ways to stay informed and get involved—boards & commissions, service projects, and more.

  • Build relationships with City staff and fellow residents to strengthen two‑way communication.

Application & selection

  • Application required: Interested residents must apply to be considered and pass a background check. 

  • Who should apply: Lamar residents, civic leaders, and business owners who want to learn, connect, and contribute.

  • Seats: Limited to ensure quality dialogue and access.

  • Selection criteria: Demonstrated interest in civic engagement, availability to attend all sessions, and a balanced cohort.

  • Cost: Free to participants.
