With the potential of a foot of snow in portions of the area, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is pleading with citizens to be extra cautious on the roadways.

Corporal Sam Carpenter says emergency response will be there BUT it may be slow due to difficult conditions so they ask that you only travel if absolutely necessary, especially on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

"We don't like storms like this to happen, but if we're going to get one, this one's kind of falling on a pretty good time, honestly with it starting in the middle of the night on Friday after most people's work week's over.

The National Weather Service in Springfield currently projects anywhere between 4-12" of snowfall, depending on where you live. Areas along and south of I-44 seem to have a better chance at the most precipitation.

He urges you to get everything done today and the first half of your Friday so you're prepared to be inside a good chunk of the weekend. "We're going to have everybody that's available working and we're also going to be having 24 hour coverage," added Carpenter.

"We're going to constantly have people out there around the clock. That being said, there aren't a lot of us. So if you do choose to travel during this, at least do yourself a favor before you leave your house. I would be provisioned in your vehicle for the chance that you may become stranded for an extended period of time."

Drivers are advised to fully provision their vehicles with warm clothes, food, water, and a full gas tank and to slow down and buckle up.

"Just because the speed limit sign says 70 doesn't mean that's the safest speed to drive. So we need you to drive with the conditions slow down, take your time, stay home if you can."
