Joplin Observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day: What’s Open and Closed
What do you think?

JOPLIN, Mo. — As the Joplin community marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day today, many government offices, schools, and essential services will pause operations in observance of the federal holiday honoring the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. However, most retail, dining, and grocery options will remain available for residents.
According to city officials, Joplin City Hall and related municipal offices will be closed for the day. The regularly scheduled Joplin City Council meeting has been postponed to Tuesday, January 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council chambers at City Hall.
Joplin Public Transit (JPT) buses will not run on Monday.
Federal and state government offices, including the U.S. Post Office, will also be closed, with no regular mail delivery. Most banks will follow the federal holiday schedule and remain closed, though online banking transactions may be limited.
Public schools in the Joplin Schools district will be closed, as the holiday is listed as a no-school day on the district calendar.
Essential and commercial services will largely continue as usual. Major grocery stores such as Walmart and Target, along with other big-box retailers, are expected to operate on regular or slightly modified holiday hours. Many local restaurants, fast-food chains, and pharmacies will also remain open to serve the community.
One notable exception to typical holiday disruptions: Trash and curbside recycling collection in Joplin will proceed on its normal schedule, unaffected by the MLK Day observance, city officials confirmed.
