Joplin man shot after lunging at deputies with a knife

A domestic incident resulted in an officer-involved shooting in Jasper, Missouri, early Sunday morning.

Court documents say a man, armed with a knife, broke into his ex-girlfriend's house and started breaking stuff and threatening her.

When officers arrived, the suspect, 43-year-old Gavon Newton, of Joplin, advanced towards the deputies, who tased him twice, but no avail.

As Newton continued towards the deputies with his knife out, one fired his duty weapon, striking Newton multiple times.

Two deputies rendered aid on scene until EMS arrived. Newton was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

He now faces a couple felony charges.
