Joplin man arrested for two DWI's in two hours, assaulting hospital worker
A man from Joplin arrested for two DWI's in the span of about two hours Sunday.
The first came just before 3pm, when 36-year-old Brandon G. Swartz was taken into custody in Cass County for DWI, felony endangering the welfare of a child and driving while suspended or revoked.
Then just after 5pm, a deputy was advised of a careless and imprudent driver on I-49, south of Harrisonville.
The trooper followed Swartz's heavy duty pickup truck and attempted to pull him over.
According to a probable cause statement, Swartz fled, nearly hitting several vehicles. He exceeded 100mph during the pursuit that ended when his truck failed to negotiate a curve and overturned on a county road.
Swartz suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital in Butler. There, he allegedly became combative and started kicking some of the medical staff and spitting at them.
Swartz then reportedly kicked a medical staff member in the throat, leaving a red contusion just above her collarbone.
Swartz was eventually released with no evidence of serious injury and was transported to the Bates County Jail where he was placed on a 24-hour investigative hold.
