Sweltering heat leads to indoor recess for Joplin elementary students

Joplin parents received the following message from the Joplin R-VIII School System Monday afternoon:
"Parents, we loved being back with students today!
"Due to excessive heat this week, elementary students will stay inside for recess. Please send bus riders of all ages with water bottles all week.
"We will ensure water bottles are filled at the end of the day, prior to students boarding buses."
An excessive heat warning remains in effect through Thursday evening with triple-digit temperatures likely and "real feel" temps of 115°-120°.
