Kansas City man sentenced in killing of transgender woman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A 43-year-old Kansas City man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the shooting death of a transgender woman.

Marcus Lewis was sentenced Thursday in the death of 24-year-old Brooklyn Lindsey. Lewis pleaded guilty in June to voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Lindsey was found dead on the steps of a northeast Kansas City home in June 2019.

Court records indicate Lewis and Lindsey got into a fight before he pulled a gun and shot her.

Prosecutors said after DNA evidence linked Lewis to Lindsey's death, he admitted that he shot her and fled.
