Carthage residents voted on Tuesday to allow the city to collect a use tax on items bought over the internet.
The vote count came to 271 "yes" to 265 "no" votes.
The passing of this item allows the city of Carthage to put a 2.75% tax on items purchased on the web, which was already applied to brick-and-mortar stores.
Previously, the city had tried to pass a use tax in 2012 as a response to a decision by the Missouri Supreme Court, but that effort failed.
