One lawmaker in Jefferson City wants to make the biggest cut in history to the state’s income tax rate.
Republican Senator Lincoln Hough of Springfield is sponsoring a bill that would cut the rate by one half of one percent. It’s called Senate Bill 627.
The idea is to lower the income tax for the state from 5.3% down to 4.8% by sometime next year.
He says that would cut about $500 million from the state’s coffers but the state is now has nearly $2 billion in federal pandemic money in its coffers.
A State Senate Democratic leader says the tax cut should only go to people in need.
