Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty opposes execution of Tremane Wood

OKLAHOMA CITY – On Thursday, November 13, the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (OK-CADP) asks the public to join them during the Tremane Wood “Don’t Kill for Me” community gathering opposing the scheduled execution that morning at 10 a.m.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Governor’s Mansion, at 820 NE 23rd Street at Phillips Avenue.

There will also be a gathering outside the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Groups joining OK-CADP in both events include: Wood’s Family, the Tremane Wood Foundation, ACLU of Oklahoma, and the Julius Jones Institute.

Wood was convicted for the 2002 stabbing death of Ronnie Wipf.

On Nov. 5, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted to recommend clemency for Wood by a vote of 3-2.

Dr. Elizabeth Overman, OK-CADP Chair stated, ” Tremane Wood did not receive adequate representation at trial. He and his family have been betrayed by the State of Oklahoma which is supposed to ensure that all court proceedings are fair and just. The man who actually carried out the killing confessed that he did so and was sentenced to life in prison without parole, co-defendant Tremane Wood was sentenced to death. The family of the murdered man is asking that Tremane Wood not be executed. There is a legal case pending pointing to the prosecutor who failed to disclose all of the evidence. Moving to execution is always wrong. In this case it is an unusually visibly damaging travesty of fairness and justice.”

Beginning at 10 a.m. participants will stand in silence until notice of a stay of execution is received or the execution is carried out. The vigil will conclude with a circle of prayer and contemplation. The event will be canceled if the execution is postponed or canceled.

Wood, 46, would be the third person executed in Oklahoma in 2025 and the eighteenth person to be executed after a six-year moratorium ended in Oklahoma.in October 2021.
