Taking care of your teeth
Reinforcing the critical role of proper brushing and flossing techniques in preventing dental issues.
That was discussed with Addysen of Team Dental during National Dental Hygiene Month on the Morning Newswatch.
Addysen told Newstalk KZRG you should brush:
“Definitely twice a day for two minutes each time. That part’s really important. And then making sure that you’re flossing at least once a day and preferably at night before you brush.”
This effectively removes plaque and debris.
Flossing first loosens particles between teeth, allowing brushing to clear them out fully.
Addysen explained flossing targets hard-to-reach spots where toothbrushes can’t reach.
Proper technique includes holding the brush at a 45-degree angle toward gums and using circular motions for maximum plaque removal.
This routine directly reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease by disrupting bacteria buildup.
Electric toothbrushes are preferred for their higher brush stroke rate and better plaque removal compared to manual brushes.
Softer bristles are recommended to avoid gum damage while effectively cleaning.
Brushing too hard can cause gum recession, leading to tooth sensitivity and discomfort with cold drinks.
Addysen stressed that technique matters more than force in maintaining healthy gums and teeth.
Gum Disease Prevention and Treatment
According to Addysen, consistent hygiene prevents gum disease.
Plaque buildup near gums leads to inflammation, bleeding, and eventual bone loss if untreated, known as periodontal disease.
Addysen described how bacteria trapped in plaque inflames gums and erodes bone supporting teeth.
Prevention relies on regular brushing, flossing, and non-alcohol mouth rinses to avoid mouth dryness and cavity risk.
Mouthwash supports fresh breath but does not replace mechanical cleaning methods.
Team Dental provides comprehensive initial exams lasting about two hours, focusing heavily on education and detailed gum and bone health assessments.
Team Dental is actively welcoming new patients and focuses on making dental care accessible and supportive.
