State senator Jill Carter townhall tonight on Missouri property taxes

How to deal with the Missouri tax commission wanting to raise tax assessments and property taxes.

According to state senator Jill Carter, that’s the reason:

“We’re having a town hall meeting tonight at Crowder College from 6:30 to 8:30 and it’s going to be in the Farber building on the second floor. So I’m looking forward to seeing everybody there.”

Carter went on  to say:  “We’re going to have our assessors there, our schools will be represented by a lot of those stakeholders . Persons to discuss property taxes impact will be there just to answer questions and have this discussion about how we address these issues.”

Property Tax Reform and State Tax Commission Crisis:

The reason for this townhall meeting is because of the major community controversy involving the Missouri State Tax Commission overstepping their authority by threatening local governments with sales taxes being withheld to the communities unless property taxes are raised.

During a recent Missouri legislature special session, emergency legislation was passed that 22 counties implemented tax freezes while the remainder chose caps on property taxes.

According to Carter, Newton County has now joined the multi-county lawsuit against the State Tax Commission for exceeding their statutory authority.
