Social Security Reverses Course on Paper Checks After Pushback from Missouri Aging Advocates

The Social Security Administration is adjusting its plan to phase out paper checks, announcing they will continue in limited cases.

The shift comes after concerns were raised about older adults and people with disabilities who may struggle with fully electronic payments.

Stacy Morse, Executive Director of the Missouri Council on Aging, says she’s glad the agency listened and is working to support those affected.

“If you’re over 90 years old, if you live in a rural area or lack mental capacity, those people are able to reach out to Social Security and ask about a waiver. We’re still a little concerned about how those people might know to ask for a waiver. It doesn’t seem like there has been very much education being sent out.”

The Missouri Council on Aging says they will be hosting a webinar on September 16th to help understand the changes and their options.
