Joplin Unveils Vibrant New Mural on Historic Route 66

JOPLIN, Mo. — Downtown Joplin added another installation into the Route 66 Mural Park on Monday.

Located at 629 S. Main Street, the artwork, a community-driven project by the Leadership Joplin Class of 2025, was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon, drawing local leaders, residents, and visitors along Historic Route 66.

“I think it sparkles with life,” said Emma Marsh, marketing coordinator at Allgeier, Martin and Associates, Inc. “I am very glad for it to have been such a success. And it is so much bigger and louder and prouder than we thought in the beginning. So we’re really glad for our sponsor and location, creative audio, who helped it become such a big deal.”

Commissioned as part of the Leadership Joplin class’s community service initiative, the mural was brought to life by talented local artists Derek Wieberg and Austin Clay. Positioned on the north end of the east wall of 629 S. Main Street, the artwork is prominently visible to westbound drivers on 7th Street, adding a vibrant landmark to Joplin’s historic corridor.

The mural’s creation was a true community effort. On May 31, dozens of residents joined artists of all skill levels for “Color the Community Day,” where over 100 participants added their own brushstrokes to the mural-in-progress. The event fostered a sense of unity and pride, with the Leadership Joplin Class of 2025 expressing heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed.

“I’m really excited to someday tell my son that that mural is because of me,” Marsh added with a smile. “I’m proud of it, not only for my future legacy, but also the legacy of each person who painted on that wall.”

The new mural adds to Joplin’s growing reputation as a cultural hub along the iconic highway, inviting travelers and locals alike to pause and appreciate the city’s artistic vibrancy.
