Newton County voting on Prop A to fund county retirement system

Tuesday, August 5th, Newton County residents are going to be voting on Prop A, which would place a “use tax” on out of state vendors that sell to Newton County residents.

The use tax will only be used if sales tax is not collected on a sale.

Newton County Sheriff Matt Stewart told Newstalk KZRG what the use tax would be used for:

“Yeah, it’s just a big piece of it is that recruitment. And even more importantly than the recruitment is that retention. “We want to make sure we’re retaining the best. The best. We want to make sure we’re taking care of our people. Our people are our best resource and we got to make sure we’re taking care of our folks and provide them with a good solid retirement plan. So after they’ve served their time serving the citizens of Newton county for, you know, 30 years, they’re able to comfortably retire.”
