Biggest, brightest meteor shower underway over Missouri

(Learfield) The biggest meteor shower of the year is underway. Paul Temple says the Perseid meteor shower from mid-July to Mid-August puts on a pretty good show. Temple is the Director of the Morrison Observatory at Central Methodist University, in Fayette, Missouri. He says that you can have up to 100 meteors per hour, and most meteor showers, you’re lucky to get 10 meteors an hour.

He went on to say that the Perseid meteor shower will peak around August 12th and 13th as the earth passes through a comet debris field. The best time to see it will be between 3-4 am, however, anytime between 12:30 and 5:30 you do see meteors, but that mid time is the peak. He recommends a reclining lawn chair and pillow for comfort, but says there’s no need for binoculars or a telescope, because you’ll want to just look at the entire sky. He recommends watching it away from the city lights to get the best view.
