Rain falls but runners undeterred on 10-year anniversary

The ten-year anniversary of Joplin’s tornado began with rain but that didn’t deter the thousands of runners who turned out.
This year’s Freeman Joplin Memorial Run 10 year Anniversary logo honored seven symbols of hope and renewal, several featured as past icons of hope for the running series. The symbols included that of Freeman Hospital, the St. Mary’s Cross, the Butterfly emblem and the Memorial Ring.
The Spirit Tree, which became a home for local birds after trees were destroyed, has become a symbol of care for the vulnerable and displaced. The duct-taped letters that spell out HopE High School, after the J and lin were ripped from the Joplin sign, represent s commitment to rebuild stronger than ever.
The Joplin Memorial Run logo, featuring the flags that line our streets each year with 161 names, honors the loved ones lost.
