Joplin councilman Brian Cowles announces plans to resign
What do you think?
Joplin City Councilman Brian Cowles has announced his intent to resign, citing concerns about transparency, city leadership, and what he describes as a lack of accountability at City Hall.
In a lengthy statement, Cowles accused city officials of discouraging public communication, withholding information from council members, and failing to address employee concerns adequately.
Cowles also questioned the timing of a recent recall notice against him and the discovery of tax lien documents more than 13 years old involving his deceased former spouse. He said he is working to determine whether he has any legal responsibility for those obligations.
His statement revisited several issues, including an investigation into alleged intimidation between council members, inappropriate conduct during a council retreat, and disagreements over the city's data center regulations.
Cowles also criticized the city's response to homelessness, questioned spending involving Proposition Police & Fire revenue and raised concerns about proposed 12% employee pay increases.
The councilman, elected in April, has also recently drawn attention for requesting that Joplin police explore a possible immigration enforcement partnership with ICE.
Cowles emphasized that he has not formally submitted his resignation and will announce an effective date.
He says he intends to remain involved in local government and help recruit future council candidates.
"My disappointment is not with the citizens of Joplin," Cowles wrote. "It is with what I experienced inside city government and what I believe is a lack of independent oversight and accountability."
