Attempted first-degree murder charges have now been filed against a man from Baxter Springs after a weekend stabbing.

23-year-old Tramone Howard-Hill was initially arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon following the incident Saturday in the 300 block of East 11th Street.

Cherokee County sheriff's detectives say additional interviews and investigative leads established probable cause to pursue an attempted first-degree murder charge.

Detectives have submitted the necessary paperwork, and Howard-Hill remains in the Cherokee County Jail under a no-bond order.

The victim, who suffered multiple stab wounds and was initially hospitalized in critical condition, has since been upgraded to stable condition and is recovering.

Howard-Hill allegedly fled before officers arrived but was later located walking along Highway 69A north of Baxter.

Authorities also discovered he had an outstanding warrant from Shawnee County for electronic solicitation of a child.

Deputies say it was a targeted attack and that there was never an ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing.
