A Carthage dog boarding business has been ordered to stop accepting paying customers unless it obtains a valid state license.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced Wednesday that her office took action against Deana Brown, who operates The Dog House on Apple Road LLC in Jasper County.

According to the state, Brown continued boarding dogs after the facility's license expired. Inspectors reported finding more than two dozen dogs being boarded at the business on two separate occasions while the facility was unlicensed.

State officials also said advertising for boarding services remained posted at the property and along Highway 59.

The attorney general's office said Brown refused a required annual inspection, ordered an inspector to leave the property, and said she would not allow future inspections.

The Jasper County Circuit Court has since entered a default judgment against Brown after she did not appear in the case.

The attorney general's announcement did not allege that inspectors found animals neglected or living in unsafe conditions at the Carthage facility, simply that they are not operating with the proper paperwork.
