Families of children with developmental disabilities will have an opportunity to explore healthcare experiences in a welcoming, hands-on environment through an upcoming community event designed to make routine health and wellness activities more familiar and approachable.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 10, at the Wilkinson Alumni Center at Pittsburg State University.

Children ages 1 to 12 and their families will have opportunities to participate in immersive healthcare learning stations focused on common experiences children may encounter throughout their lives. The goal is to increase exposure to healthcare-related activities and resources while helping families build confidence around routine healthcare visits.

Children will be able to take part in activities including dental visits, doctor appointments, vision and hearing tests, and haircut experiences. The interactive stations are designed to give children an opportunity to become familiar with these settings and activities in a supportive environment.

For parents and caregivers, the event will also offer resources and information focused on helping children have more positive experiences with routine healthcare and wellness activities.

Organizers emphasize that the event is intended for learning and familiarization rather than medical care. No screenings or medical tests will take place during the event.

Two sessions will be available for families:

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The event is not a drop-off program. Parents or caregivers are expected to attend alongside their children and participate in the experience.

By creating opportunities for children to explore healthcare activities before they encounter them in a clinical setting, the event aims to help reduce uncertainty and create more positive associations with routine health and wellness experiences.

For families impacted by developmental disabilities, the event offers an opportunity to learn, explore, and connect with resources while helping children become more comfortable with the healthcare experiences that are an important part of growing up.
