Quapaw Nation says bison died in dehydration-related incident

QUAPAW, Okla. — Quapaw Nation officials say 32 bison died in a recent incident linked to dehydration, while the Nation’s Department of Public Safety continues investigating exactly what led to the losses.
The death toll was disclosed during the Sept. 19 Business Committee meeting.
Officials said investigators will provide their findings to Quapaw Nation Court once the review is complete.
The Nation says 143 bison remain.
Veterinarians have evaluated the surviving herd and said the animals are recovering from dehydration as well.
Officials have since increased oversight, requiring twice-daily herd checks and daily documentation. The Nation is also improving water access by expanding ponds, using water trucks and planning a new well.
Among the animals lost was Frosty, a rare white bison that had become one of the best-known animals in the herd.
