Carl Junction Schools mourns the loss of a seventh-grade student

Carl Junction Schools is mourning the loss of a seventh-grade student, Destri Watson.

In a message to the school community, Superintendent Dr. David Pyle said the district is grieving Watson’s death and acknowledged the difficult time for students, families and staff.

Pyle said the district’s immediate focus is on supporting students and one another.

School counselors and support staff are available to students today and will continue to provide assistance in the days and weeks ahead.

Students who need someone to talk with or simply want to spend time with a trusted adult are encouraged to seek support. Families can also contact their child’s school for help connecting with a counselor.

School officials say they are encouraging parents and caregivers to check in with their children in the coming days, noting that students may experience grief in different ways and their feelings can change over time.

The district has also compiled local and community resources for families who need additional support.
