CJ Chamber tightens controls after former director charged

The Carl Junction Area Chamber of Commerce has strengthened its financial controls following allegations that its former executive director used chamber funds for personal expenses.

Nicholas Howard is accused of using chamber credit cards for purchases including utilities, streaming services, restaurants, groceries, gas and airline expenses.

Investigators say unauthorized purchases exceeded $750 on each of two chamber bank accounts.

In a statement released by the chamber, Acting Board President Gary Mishler said the organization took immediate action after learning of the allegations, including separating Howard from the chamber.

Mishler said the board has since reviewed its financial practices and internal controls and made changes designed to strengthen oversight and prevent similar problems.

The chamber said it cannot discuss some details because of the ongoing legal investigation and asked the community to allow the legal process to play out.

Howard is accused of stealing and two counts of fraudulent use of a credit or debit device.
