UPDATE: Authorities say it appears to have been accidental.

A homicide investigation initially was said to be underway at a home in rural Lawrence County, following the death of 6-year-old Bridger Boggs.

The boy was the son of Duste and Erin Boggs and the nephew of Missouri State Representative Mitch Boggs.

Now, Lawrence County Sheriff Brad Delay reportedly indicated the boy was accidentally shot by another child.

Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy to confirm details in the case.

Statement from Representative Mitch Boggs on the Passing of His Nephew, Bridger Boggs:

It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of my beloved nephew, Bridger Ransom Boggs, who died following a tragic accident at his home.

Bridger was born January 28, 2020, to my brother, Duste, and his wife, Erin Boggs. He was our little happy man, our little cowboy, and was deeply loved by his entire family. Full of life and always on the move, Bridger could often be seen riding around on his little Segway. While our hearts are broken by this unimaginable loss, we find comfort in knowing that Bridger has gone to meet his Savior.

Our family has been surrounded by an incredible outpouring of love and support, and we are deeply grateful for everyone who has reached out and stood beside us. We ask for your continued prayers for Duste, Erin, and our entire family, and respectfully ask that their privacy be protected as we grieve.
