The Springfield Cardinals will have a new name beginning in 2027, ending more than two decades under the same identity as their Major League Baseball affiliate.

The Double-A club announced Tuesday it will unveil a new permanent name, logos and uniforms Oct. 6 at Route 66 Stadium.

The team will remain in Springfield, continue playing at the same stadium and stay affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals. Only the local team’s identity is changing.

General Manager Dan Reiter said the goal is to create something more closely tied to Springfield and southwest Missouri.

“This rebrand is about becoming uniquely us and representing Southwest Missouri with pride and joy,” Reiter said.

The new name has already been selected, but the organization has not released it.

One possible clue may be sitting in plain sight.

Earlier this year, Hammons Field was renamed Route 66 Stadium, strengthening the franchise’s connection to Springfield’s history as the birthplace of Route 66.

That has already fueled speculation that the new team name could carry a Route 66 theme, with “Springfield 66ers” among the names being discussed by fans.

There is no public confirmation that 66ers, or any other Route 66-related name, has been chosen.

For now, the Springfield Cardinals name will remain through the end of the 2026 season.
