Kansas Gov. Kelly shifts support after preferred candidate loses primary
What do you think?
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly's preferred candidate for governor was defeated in Tuesday's Democratic primary.
State Sen. Cindy Holscher won the nomination over fellow state Sen. Ethan Corson.
Kelly backed Corson during the primary race as the Democrat she hoped would succeed her after two terms in office.
After Holscher's victory, however, Kelly released a statement saying she is supporting Holscher in the general election against Republican nominee Ty Masterson.
"The future of Kansas will be determined in November," Kelly wrote, arguing that a Masterson victory would take Kansas "back to the dark days of Sam Brownback."
Kelly praised the progress made during her administration and said Holscher is the candidate who can continue moving the state forward while bringing people together to address rising costs and other challenges facing Kansas families.
"I ask all Kansans — regardless of political party — to unite and move our state forward by electing Cindy Holscher this November," Kelly said.
Holscher will face Masterson in November as Republicans try to reclaim the governor's office after eight years of Democratic control.
