A proposed fertilizer storage facility has some Cassville residents worried it could leave the community dealing with stronger odors for years to come.

HydroAg, a company based in Arkansas, is seeking approval to install a nearly one-million-gallon storage tank in Barry County. The tank would hold liquid byproducts from food manufacturing before they're applied to nearby farmland as fertilizer.

Neighbors say unpleasant smells have already become a recurring problem from temporary storage at the site. They fear making the operation permanent could increase odor issues, hurt nearby property values and affect visitors headed to attractions like Roaring River State Park.

The company maintains the material is used as an agricultural fertilizer and says the permanent tank would replace temporary storage already in use.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is reviewing the permit application and will determine whether the project can move forward.
