The movement of a museum across the state translates into big news for Newton County and all of southwest Missouri.
The Newton County Tourism Council has reached an agreement allowing the Space Museum and Gus Grissom Center—currently in Bonne Terre—to relocate to Neosho.
The Grissom Center opened in Bonne Terre on March 16, 2019 with over 10 NASA astronauts, flight directors, and aerospace personnel present for the ribbon cutting.
The facility was constructed over a period of more than four years with the help of the “Mercury 6”, a team of former McDonnell Aircraft Corporation engineers that had made the first human spaceflights possible decades earlier.
The Center contains artifacts and displays worth an estimated $40 million.
Gus Grissom was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.
He and two other astronauts died in a fire during pre-launch tests for Apollo One in 1967.
