(Missourinet) - A Missouri senator is pushing a major change to how U.S. citizenship can be revoked.

Missouri U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt has introduced the Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation Act, legislation that would expand federal power to revoke citizenship from people tied to large scale fraud, serious felonies, or terrorist organizations.

The proposal has backing from the White House, and Schmitt — a Republican and Trump ally — says the goal is to protect the integrity of the naturalization system.

Under the bill, denaturalization could also be pursued in cases involving aggravated felonies, espionage, or links to designated terrorist groups.
The measure still has several hoops to jump through in Washington.
