YMCA Volunteer Receives Statewide Award

Grove, Okla. – The Grand Lake Family YMCA is proud to celebrate Grove resident Candy Brasel, who has been named the 2024 recipient of the Jim Keating Award, presented by the Oklahoma Parkinson’s Alliance.

This honor recognizes individuals whose leadership, compassion, and advocacy have significantly strengthened the Parkinson’s community across Oklahoma.

Candy’s impact on the Grove community is profound. After her own Parkinson’s diagnosis, she quickly recognized the lack of local support and resources for individuals living with the disease. Rather than accept that gap, she took action. Through her leadership and determination, Grove now offers a Parkinson’s support group, speech therapy, exercise therapy, and the YMCA’s Pedaling for Parkinson’s class—all programs that meet at the Grand Lake Family YMCA.

“Candy has changed the landscape of Parkinson’s care in northeast Oklahoma,” said Matthew Morton of the Oklahoma Parkinson’s Alliance during the award presentation. “Her warmth, encouragement, and commitment have created a community where people feel supported, informed, and never alone.”

YMCA staff and program leaders echoed this praise. Candy is often the first to welcome newly diagnosed individuals, helping them find connection, confidence, and hope. Her steady presence has grown the local support group into a strong, welcoming network that reflects the Y’s mission of strengthening community.

“We see Candy’s heart in action every week,” said Adrian Arnold, Grand Lake Family YMCA Associate Director. “Her leadership has brought vital resources to Grove and has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless families. We are honored to be the home for these programs and inspired by her dedication.”

The Grand Lake Family YMCA congratulates Grand Lake Family YMCA on this meaningful recognition and celebrates the ongoing work of the Oklahoma Parkinson’s Alliance in supporting individuals and families across the state.
