At last week's Joplin City council meeting, pay increases for 5 city employees were discussed.
Mayor Keenan Cortez told Newstalk KZRG:
“These are council employees. This Joplin City Council has five members of city staff that actually work directly for council. We get to control their reviews, their annual reviews, their pay increases, all that stuff. Now those employees are the city manager, of course, the city clerk, the city attorney, the public defender and the city judge.”
Joplin City Manager Nick Edwards has refused to take a pay increase.
