State senator Jill Carter on how Federal government shutdown might affect Missouri

Missouri state senator Jill Carter on the KZRG Morning Newswatch said that the state should be in good shape during the Federal Government shutdown.

“And so right now the state is in fairly good shape. The only thing that we do anticipate seeing is just maybe some problems or hiccups with administrative burdens trying to get certain programs or new grants allocated in those drop down funds. But for the most part, a lot of those funds, like Title 1 funding, special ed, Medicaid, SNAP benefits are automatic drawdowns. So unless this goes on for a lot longer than 35 days, which was the longest, I think we should be okay.”

Near the start of the shutdown, University of Missouri ag policy expert Pat Westhoff told Missourinet that the WIC program could run out of funds first and that SNAP, food stamps, might have problems starting in November.
